A Beekeeper’s Story – Manuka Honey And Summerglow
When he was just a young lad, Bill Bennett built his first bee hive from scrap wood.
Thus a lifelong passion for producing the best quality Manuka honey had its beginnings.
From its humble beginnings, SummerGlow Apiaries has blossomed to over 1600 hives, setting the standards for Manuka Honey production.
Bill and Margaret Bennett have been beekeeping for over 36 years in the greater Waikato area.
Summerglow Apiaries specialises in the production of high activity UMF Manuka Honey.
Back in the early days of SummerGlow, Bill and Margaret used to make their own bee hives. “I would wait until our kids were asleep, and then wire all the honey frames in our front lounge,” says Margaret. Summerglow Apiaries has always been a family-orientated business. “At one time or another, all of the kids have helped out with the bees”, says Margaret....................

Are all retailers clear on the credentials inherent in the UMF quality mark?
The UMF Honey Association Executive contracted two major in-market audits last year, focussing on product on sale at retail in the UK and Singapore. The results were what you would expect – all the honey marketed with the UMF quality mark was true to label, but there was a large amount of product being sold as ‘Active’ and described by the retailer as being the same as UMF . In some cases retailers were trying to represent the product as genuine UMF quality honey, and in other cases the product was simply not true to label.

New technology to protect New Zealand's Manuka Honey
The Unique Manuka Factor Honey Association (UMFHA) is teaming up with Analytica Laboratories of Hamilton to definitively identify primarily Manuka and also other New Zealand monofloral honeys. “Utilising High Resolution Mass Spectrometry based technology in this highly innovative application provides another cornerstone to the value and integrity of the UMF® quality mark and brand” according the Associations General Manager John Rawcliffe.

China to help protect Manuka exports
After more than two years of negotiations, a deal has been struck with Chinese officials to protect New Zealand exports of Manuka honey. The UMF Honey Association, which represents 70% of genuine Manuka honey retailers, has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Chinese government-run agency that tests food imports.

China recognises and supports New Zealand’s UMF® Quality Mark
Two key agreements relating to imports and testing of manuka honey and its unique properties have just signed with the Jiangsu Entry and Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau of the People's Republic of China (or JSCIQ). These agreements will protect Chinese consumers and New Zealand exporters and will create further opportunities to expand business ties between both counties.
